My name is Ophelia Amirchian and work in North Ryde Community Aid & Information Centre as Armenian Social Support & Care Coordinator. I organise weekly social groups for Armenian senior citizens on Mondays in Ryde Civic Hall.
I usually invite guest speakers who are willing to give information regarding senior’s issues. Law Society contacted our organisation and made suggestions of appointing lawyers to our group as guest speakers. It was a good suggestion and we agreed with that. Law Society organised Mr. Vrege Kolokossian and Mr.Garbis Kolokossian from Gerard Malouf & Partners to attend the group on 15.10.12 to give information about elderly matters.
They arrived on time and had a very useful talk regarding important issues relevant to Armenian Seniors. They spoke in Armenian to the group and it was very simple for our clients to understand and benefiting. Legal discussions are always difficult for ordinary people to grasp, but they made their speeches very simple for the group to understand. Mr. Vrege gave an overall insight of elderly’s rights and available services and Garbis spoke about How to make a will, Power of attorney and issues related to them. Garbis is a young solicitor but he was able to make a very good connection with our elderly clients and facilitated question time for them during and after the session.
They approached Armenian senior clients in a very professional but friendly manner and the clients felt very connected with their speeches.
I have already recommended them to my other colleague who runs similar groups and she is planning to invite them as guest speakers for her groups.
We all look forward to have Vrege and Garbis Kolokossian for our future group gatherings to talk about other issues relevant to seniors.
